This guide covers practical tortoise feeding plans, including daily routines, weekly food rotation, and seasonal adjustments to keep your tortoise healthy and growing properly.
What Is a Feeding Plan for Tortoises & Turtles?
A feeding plan is a structured way to provide your tortoise or turtle with the right type of food, in the correct amounts, and on a consistent schedule.
Instead of feeding random foods, a feeding plan will ensure your reptile receives a balanced diet over time, including proper nutrients like fiber, calcium, vitamins, and proteins. What does a good plan consist of?
A good feeding plan consist of:
- Consistency: (daily/weekly routine)
- Variety: (different safe foods)
- Valance: (correct ratios of greens, protein, and treats)
- Species-specific needs: (herbivores vs. omnivores vs. aquatics)
Example of a weekly feeding plan for your pet tortoise:
| Monday: | Dandelion + escarole mix; sprinkle of clover |
| Tuesday: | Collard + endive; a few hibiscus petals |
| Wednesday: | Mustard + romaine; small amount of plantain weed |
| Thursday: | Turnip greens + chicory; a few nasturtiums |
| Friday: | Arugula + red leaf; tiny carrot shavings |
| Saturday: | Collard + mallow; optional a few soaked, species-appropriate pellets |
| Sunday: | Mixed “leftovers” bowl (varied greens) + brief graze/hay access |
**Portion cue: Offer a salad roughly the size of the tortoise’s shell once daily; remove leftovers after a few hours to keep it clean.
**Feeding Frequency: Hatchlings I like to feed daily, Adults you can do every day or every other day depending on species and age.
- Pro Tip: If you need some guidance on what to feed I created a post putting a feeding list together. Check it out to help create a grocery list!
Good equipment to have when keeping turtles & tortoises:
- Scale: weighing out food is a good way to stay consistent on portion size. You can adjust it pretty accurate and keep track of how much your reptile eats.
- Mini fridge/Freezer: This is great for when you need to prep or go on food runs. Having a specific fridge/freezer just for reptile food can help keep things organized and help in many ways.
- Knifes, plates, and dishes: I like to have my own knives to use on my animals. I also keep feeding dish’s and trays in a prep area. Keeping a area with animal dish’s and tools can save time and makes prepping easier.
Types of species?
- Need help picking a species or seeing what species you have? Check out the list I have started of species profiles, your next species might be on the list!
