Tortoise Feeding List (Safe Foods, Greens & Diet Guide)

This tortoise feeding list outlines safe greens, vegetables, weeds, and supplemental foods to help you create a balanced and species-appropriate diet. Also added some proteins great for turtles!

Greens Feeding List:

Feed mostly high-fiber, low-sugar greens. Mix staples with rotation items and seasonal weeds. Rinse well; avoid pesticides.

Staple GreensDandelion, escarole/endive, collard, mustard, turnip greens, romaine, red/green leaf
Rotation GreensChicory, radicchio, kale (rotate), bok choy (rotate), arugula, watercress
Safe WeedsPlantain (Plantago), sow-thistle, mallow, clover (rotate), grape/mulberry leaves
Edible FlowersHibiscus, nasturtium, rose petals, squash blossoms
High-Fiber AddsGrass hays (orchard/Timothy) as side graze; cactus pads (spines removed) for arid species
Calcium SourcesLight powder 2–3× weekly; optional cuttlebone
Hydration FoodsRomaine, cucumber (small amounts), soaked pellets (species-appropriate)
Treats (Occasional)Pumpkin/squash, carrot shavings (very small), herbs (parsley/cilantro—rotate)
Foods to LimitSpinach, beet greens, chard (oxalates—rotate sparingly)
Pellet type foodI like Muzuri Tortoise diet, Flukers Farm Tortoise blend (use as part of a varied diet)
AvoidIceberg as a staple, fruit for tortoises (see box turtle note), animal protein for tortoises, bread/pasta/dog food
Note: Oxalate/goitrogenic greens (e.g., spinach, kale) are fine in rotation, not as the daily base.

Protein Sources For Turtles:

Some Turtles and Tortoise require proteins Here is a little list I put together to have a quick place to reference.

Staple Protein (Primary Diet – Feed Regularly)Earthworms, Nightcrawlers, Red Wigglers, Crickets (gut loaded), Dubia Roaches, Phoenix worms, Mazuri Turtle diet (aquatic)
Rotation Protein (Variety – Feed Weekly)Mealworms (small amounts), Superworms, Waxworms, Silkworms, Hornworms, Snails, Slugs, Feeder fish.
Aquatic Protein (For Water Turtles)Freshwater shrimp, Krill, Bloodworms, Freeze dried insects, Aquatic snails.
High-Calcium Protein (Great Boost)Black soldier fly larvae, snails, Whole prey (fish, pinkie mice)
Enrichment / Hunting FoodsLive insects, Worms in soil, Fish in water setup.
Pellet Foods (Balanced Diet Base)Mazuri aquatic turtle diet, zoo med aquatic turtle food, hikari turtle sticks are some of my favorites.
Treats (Occasional Only)Pinkie mice, cooked lean chicken, boiled eggs
**Foods to LimitMealworms, Superworms, freeze dried foods, feed fish.
Avoid (Unsafe or Poor Nutrition)Processed meats, Dog or cat food, raw chicken or beef, wild insects that have been in contact with pesticides, bread, dairy, human junk food.

Species Note:

  • Aquatic Turtles: High protein diets, especially younger turtles.
  • Box Turtles: Omnivores and eat a mix of protein and plants.
  • Tortoises: Mostly herbivories and you should avoid all protein.

Pro Tips:

  • Always gut-load insects with nutritious greens
  • Dust protein with calcium powder 2–3× weekly
  • Offer protein in water for aquatic turtles
  • Remove uneaten food to prevent bacteria
