Temperature plays an important role in tortoise health. Because tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles, they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. In indoor enclosures, a heat lamp is often necessary to provide a proper basking area and maintain healthy activity levels.
Why Tortoises Need Heat
Tortoises depend on warmth to regulate many body functions.
Proper temperatures help with:
- digestion- tortoise need to warm up in order to digest their food. If they don’t have the opportunity to warm up they won’t have the energy to eat and have proper digestion.
- metabolism- Their metabolism is based on their temperature. The hotter they are the faster their metabolism is running, the cooler they are the slower its running.
- immune system function- Being able to heat up allow they to function in a healthy fashion, without heat their immune system functions can drop and they can be prone to illness.
- daily activity- In order for cold blooded reptiles to function daily they must be able to warm up. Heat lamps is the answer and the reason why it is so important to have.
Without adequate warmth, tortoises may become sluggish and have difficulty digesting food. Over time tortoises will become nutrient deficient and lethargic. Heat is crucial to your tortoises health.
Basking Temperature for Tortoises
- Most tortoise species need a basking spot between: 90-100*F
- I like to keep my tropical species and box turtles basking temperature at 87-92*F and my desert species a little warmer at 95-97* F. I rarely like to go to 100*F unless I have a huge enclosure.
- The basking area allows tortoises to warm up after resting and helps their bodies function properly throughout the day. Usually you will see your tortoise basking in the morning, but throughout the day your tortoise will go back and warm up.
The rest of the enclosure should remain cooler so the tortoise can move between temperature zones. It is very important to have temperature gradients in all enclosures. Tortoises need to be able to escape the heat if they want.
Indoor vs Outdoor Tortoises
- Outdoor tortoises often receive natural heat from sunlight. In warm climates, the sun provides the heat needed for basking. Make sure to provide shaded areas and hide so your tortoise can escape the heat. Having a mix of shade and sun is idea. Learn more at the Outdoor Tortoise Enclosure Guide.

Many keepers use a heat lamp together with UVB lighting to recreate natural conditions. You always want a UVB lamp in your indoor enclosures, outdoors the sun provides a natural source of UVB light.
Heat Lamps and UVB Lighting
Heat and UVB serve different purposes.
- Heat lamps provide warmth for basking. They can be a bulb, ceramic heater, or a heat emitter. What ever you use be sure to double check the temperature under the basking area. Do not exceed 100*F
- UVB lighting helps tortoises absorb calcium and develop strong shells. UVB is essential for a tortoise health.
A proper enclosure setup usually includes both types of lighting. I like to have them separate lights, but there are certain types of bulbs that put off heat and UVB all in one.

Choosing the Right Heat Lamp
Common heat sources used for tortoise enclosures include:
- basking bulbs– These put off light and are my favorite way to go especially for desert type species. Russians, Hermann’s, Greeks, Leopards all love brighter light and the light helps them fight the basking are.
- ceramic heat emitters– These heat up but don’t put off light. I like to use this when I keep tropical or low light species. I will pair it with a UVB tube light, and have the ceramic heater on a thermostat.
- reptile heat lamps– Heat lamps are built specifically for reptile basking needs. They usually use reflectors to help aim the heat and the hood is usually made of ceramic and metal.
The lamp should be placed above the basking area so the tortoise can warm itself safely. Be sure to have a thermometer to keep a eye on basking temperature and adjust the height or wattage of the bulb accordingly.
Signs Your Tortoise Is Too Cold
If temperatures are too low, tortoises may show signs such as:
- reduced activity- First sign its to cold. Your tortoise might sleep a lot, not active, or you need to pull your tortoise out of hiding for your tortoise to be active.
- poor appetite– A cold tortoise can’t digest food which will lead to low or no appetite. Your tortoise should be ready to eat everyday and if not it possible it is too cold.
- slow digestion– If you don’t see your tortoise eating, you probably will see less waste and poop. Slow digestion will occur with lower temperature causing your tortoise to poop less.
- spending excessive time hiding– as mentioned above they tend to hide a lot, or never come out of hiding. This is a good sign the enclosure is too cold or not set up properly.
Maintaining proper temperatures helps prevent these issues, maintaining a popper temperature will also reduce stress which will lead to overall better health.
