Care Guide Hub (Beginner to Advanced)

Tortoises are incredible reptiles that can live for decades when properly cared for. Whether you’re raising a hatchling or caring for an adult tortoise, understanding their diet, habitat, hydration, and lighting needs is essential for long-term health.

In this complete tortoise care guide, we cover everything from what tortoises eat to enclosure setup, UVB lighting, soaking schedules, and common mistakes new keepers should avoid. I tried to think of everything and put it into this one post.

What Do Tortoises Eat?

Diet is one of the most important parts of tortoise care. Most tortoise species thrive on a diet of leafy greens, grasses, weeds, and safe vegetables. I like to keep things interesting and make mix salads as well as keeping the diet varied.

Some excellent staple foods include:

  • Dandelion Greens
  • Collard Greens
  • Mustard Greens
  • Turnip Greens
  • Hibiscus Leaves
  • Mulberry Leaves

These leafy greens and weeds are great staple diet foods for tortoises because they contain high fiber and good amounts of calcium. Growing a lot of these greens and weeds also is fairly easy and I recommend it if you have the space. If you don’t have the space I found all the greens above in stores.

Safe Plants and Weeds for Tortoises

Many tortoise keepers grow or collect wild weeds to provide a natural diet. These are the same weeds people hate because it ruins their yards… yes those weeds. I like to have a section of my yard where I let the weeds grow out. They are easy to grow and you can harvest it over time to keep your tortoises diet varied.

Safe wild plants include:

Plantain weed
Chickweed
Mallow
Purslane
Sow thistle
Dead nettle

Just be sure that the weeds you are feeding haven’t been sprayed with pesticides or any chemicals in the ground near the weeds. Keep a clean source to keep it safe for your torotise.

Hydration and Soaking

Hydration is often overlooked but extremely important for tortoise health.

Tortoises benefit from regular soaking in shallow lukewarm water. This helps them stay hydrated, supports digestion, and prevents dehydration.

Feeding Schedule

Most tortoises should be fed daily when young and every day or every other day as adults depending on the species. I like to feed all my hatchling and juveniles everyday while all my adults that live outdoors get fed every other day.

A healthy feeding routine should include:

• leafy greens
• natural weeds
• occasional vegetables
• very limited fruit

What I like to do is keep the diet varied and try to mix it up when I can. This not only is healthier for your tortoise because it provides a balanced diet but it also allows for a little enrichment and keeps things interesting for your tortoise, which is just something everything needs.
