Meet Your Keeper (About The Tortoise Spot)
Hi, I’m Kyle (IAKK)—lifelong reptile enthusiast, outdoor adventurer, and tortoise keeper. I created The Tortoise Spot to share accurate, practical care tips to help your tortoise live a long, healthy life. I have been keeping turtles and tortoises for 20+ years, and have kept or rescued many different species. I also enjoy making videos sharing how I keep my animals, and sharing with everyone what it takes to keep multiple species. Check out the About Me page to learn more and I hope you enjoy the site. Turtle and Tortoises are my passion.
Frequently Asked Questions
In my experience no tortoise should be considered a beginner and should go into it with preparation. If I had to pick Greek, Russian, Hermann’s Tortoises are all small hardy and I think great first tortoises.
Yes- Consistent UVB is needed to ensure proper calcium metabolism and shell health. Even if you bring them out for natural sun, I still highly recommend a UVB bulb for indoor living.
High fiber greens like dandelions, collard greens, mustard greens are all great staple greens to start with. Avoid iceberg lettuce, and limit fruit in all tortoise diets.
